When are you accepted into your major?

Below is information about departments that have specific requirements and deadlines for entering their programs. Supplemental admission criteria is listed by department.

  • Accounting

    Upper division, fall only.

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • 3.0 cumulative transfer GPA; 3.0 in prerequisite courses; minimum B grades in MGA 201 and MGA 202.
  • Architecture

    Fall only.

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    • Departmental application required upon admission to the university.
    • Portfolio required for upper-level (ARC 201/sophomore fall) studio placement and admission consideration. Contact School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education for the Transfer Admissions Portfolio Guidebook.
    • No portfolio required for first-year (ARC 101/first-year fall) studio placement and admission consideration for transfer students with no college-level architecture education.
    • Please upload your digital portfolio for review through the Office of Admissions Student Status Portal.
    • Preferred applicants will have an associate’s degree in architecture or less than 34 credit hours earned.
    • Visit the School of Architecture and Planning website for additional information and advisement.
    • Applicants with college degrees must contact School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education prior to applying to the pre-professional Architecture BS for academic advisement on the accredited professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) 3+ year degree track.

    Application Deadline:

    • SUNY Application, departmental application and portfolio submission deadline (if required): March 1. No additional secondary material reviewed after May 31.
    • University at Buffalo Architecture is a fall-only admission program. Applicants are reviewed and admitted on a rolling, space-available basis.
    • Visit the UB Catalog for more information (search for pre-professional Architecture BS program).

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • 2.5 in architecture and architecture-related courses; 2.7 overall.
    • Preferred applicants will have an associate’s degree in architecture or fewer than 34 credit hours earned.
    • Design studio courses completed at other colleges are accepted as transfer elective credit only.
    • Courses completed at other colleges and universities are not automatically accepted as fulfilling departmental requirements.
    • Architecture courses taken elsewhere may be accepted. Determination is made by an evaluation of the student’s transcripts, course content, contact hours and grades earned.
    • Ineligible applicants may be offered admission to the school’s pre-professional Environmental Design BA and Architecture minor.
  • Art, Art History

  • Biochemistry

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • Minimum 2.0 overall GPA; minimum 2.5 GPA in prerequisite science and math courses. Most successful candidates accepted to biotechnology exceed these minimum GPAs and are registered in the final semester of, or have completed all, prerequisite courses.
    • Students lacking any prerequisite at the time of application may be reviewed for conditional acceptance with a detailed timeline to fulfill the missing prerequisites.
  • Business Administration

    Application Deadline

    • Students are strongly encouraged to submit an application by the end of March for fall admission and by early October for spring admission. Submission by these dates will allow ample time for processing and advisement before the start of the semester.

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    • Departmental application required for upper division studio workshop admission; direct admission to the environmental design lower division is available.
    • Application to the environmental design/urban design studio workshop sequence (upper division) is required while student is completing all prerequisite courses and is available on the School of Architecture and Planning website.
    • Contact School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education for admission information and advisement.
    • Applicants with college degrees must contact School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education prior to applying to the preprofessional environmental design BA for alternative academic advisement and information on the accredited professional Master of Urban Planning degree program.

    Application Deadline:

    • Department application submission dates are May 15 for fall admission and Oct. 15 for spring admission. Contact School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education after these dates.

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • 2.5 in prerequisite courses; 2.33 overall.
    • Competitive admission on a space-available basis.

  • Exercise Science

    Upper division, fall only; students begin in fall.

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    • Students are accepted into the program upon acceptance to UB.
    • Students who transfer to UB from another institution for the purpose of completing prerequisite courses will be directly admitted to the exercise science major.
    • Courses must be articulated to UB as equivalent courses. Courses that do not articulate to UB will not satisfy major requirements.
    • Contact department for advisement and additional information.

    Application Deadline:

    • Submit SUNY Application and transcripts. Contact the department upon acceptance.

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • Students must maintain a 2.0 or higher overall and major GPA.
  • Information Technology and Management

    • Admission to this limited-enrollment program is competitive. Transfer students are considered based on space available and quality of application.

  • Medical Technology

    • Audition required for music performance program.
    • Transfer theory placement exam.

    Application Deadline:

    • Auditions held in January, February and March. Last audition for scholarships in March. Late auditions are held during the first week of classes each semester.

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • 2.5 in prerequisite courses; 2.0 overall.
    • D grades do not fulfill major requirements.
  • Nuclear Medicine Technology

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    Application Deadline:

    • Traditional: Supplemental NursingCAS application deadline is Jan. 15. (Opens early December.)
    • Accelerated BS (ABS): Supplemental NursingCAS application deadline is Oct. 1. (Opens mid-August.)
    • RN-BS online: Rolling.

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • Traditional: 3.0 minimum overall, and prerequisite GPA, and all prerequisites complete or in progress with grades of C or better.
    • ABS: 3.0 minimum overall and prerequisite GPA and completion of at least four prerequisites at the time of application. All prerequisites must be completed with grades of C or better before starting the program.
    • RN-BS online: 2.5 recommended overall GPA. Applicants with below a 2.5 overall GPA must submit a statement.
    • See School of Nursing website for detailed admission requirements and Traditional and ABS prerequisite courses. Admission to the traditional and ABS programs is very competitive and based on a holistic review of your application materials, including essay responses, resume and GPAs. Admission to the RN to BS program is based on space availability.
  • Occupational Therapy

    BS/MS program.

    • BS/MS program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, 4720 Montgomery Lane, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814-3449; 301-652-2682.

    Application Deadline:

    • Applications must be submitted by Jan. 6. Apply online.
    • Students must be enrolled in UB at the time of application to the professional sequence.

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • Admission to the professional sequence of the program is competitive, and it is limited to approximately 45 students. Students must have no prerequisite grade lower than a C- and may repeat no more than two prerequisite courses. To be eligible to apply to the professional sequence of the program, students must have eight of the 12 prerequisites courses completed, including ES 207, OT 201, PHY 101 and STA 119. They must be completed by the Jan. 6 application deadline.
    • Applicants must have a prerequisite GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences

    Upper division, fall only.

  • Pharmacy (PharmD)

    PharmD is a graduate/professional program.

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    • Applicants may complete their prerequisite courses at UB or at another accredited institution.
    • Students who wish to complete the prerequisite courses at UB must transfer in via SUNY Application.
    • For students who have completed the prerequisites for pharmacy admission prior to enrolling at UB, the PharmCAS application is all that is required.
    • Applicants who plan to have all prerequisites completed by the end of the summer prior to fall admission must apply through PharmCAS.
    • The PCAT or other graduate standardized admissions exam is recommended for applicants with a math and science prerequisite GPA of less than 3.0.
    • A minimum of two professional and/or academic letters of reference must be received by PharmCAS.
    • A personal essay is included in the PharmCAS application.
    • Interviews are required and are available by invitation only.
    • Undergraduate degree is not required.

  • Physical Therapy

    DPT is a graduate/professional program.

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    • Prerequisite courses not completed at UB must be reviewed to determine if they satisfy major requirements.
    • Undergraduate students who have not completed the prerequisites are advised to transfer to the exercise science undergraduate program by January of their sophomore year.
    • Students who have completed a bachelor’s degree and the prerequisites should contact the program for advisement and additional information before completing the online graduate school application.
    • Official transcripts are required for all applicants.
    • There is an additional, separate University at Buffalo application fee that is required.

    Application Deadline:

    • Nov. 1; the PTCAS application opens in July.
    • It is strongly recommended that applicants submit their applications by Oct. 1 so that their application can be in “Verified” status and ready for admissions review by Nov. 1.

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • Minimum 3.0 prerequisite GPA. Prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
    • Minimum GRE score of 295 (verbal and quantitative) is required. The writing test is also required.
  • Public Health

    Fall and spring.

    • Students who transfer to UB from another institution will be directly admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) program.
    • Courses must be articulated to UB as equivalent courses. Courses that do not articulate to UB will not satisfy public health major requirements.
    • Students must maintain a 2.0 or higher overall GPA and a 2.5 major GPA.
  • Statistics

    Fall and spring.

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    • No prerequisite courses required to be accepted into the statistics major. Students are accepted into the program upon acceptance to UB.
    • Students with previous transfer work must have coursework articulated in order for those courses to satisfy major and UB Curriculum requirements.
    • Students will work with academic advisors in SPHHP’s Office of Student Services and Recruitment.
    • Submit SUNY Application with transcripts from previous institutions.

    Minimum GPA for Consideration:

    • 2.5 GPA or higher required in the following lower-division courses to maintain status as statistics major: MTH 141, MTH 142 and STA 119.
  • Theatre, Dance and Music Theatre

    Fall and spring. Fall preferred for Dance.

    Supplemental Admission Procedures/Requirements:

    • Theatre: BFA performance concentration requires an audition. The BFA design and technology concentration requires a portfolio submission and interview.
    • Theatre: Students interested in transferring into the theatre BFA program should contact the department before applying to discuss applicable credits and timeline to degree completion.
    • Dance: An audition is required for acceptance into the dance BA and BFA programs.
    • Dance: Students with transfer credits in dance should contact the department prior to applying to confirm articulation and placement.
    • Music Theatre: An audition is required.

    Application Deadline:

    • Theatre: Based on UB’s Office of Admissions application deadlines.
    • Students interested in the theatre BFA or dance program must audition or interview prior to matriculating to UB. Audition dates are available on the Department of Theatre & Dance website.

    Minimum GPA for consideration:

    • 2.5 minimum for all programs.
